I'd like to say things become more obvious once someone lets you see their life up close, but the reality is it's not until you're ready to see it that you realize the truth.
Step 2: Accept that everyone is broken, not just you.
(Corollary: That's just part of being human. It's impossible to not be broken -- tho you can surely reduce your brokenness if you work at it)
